Mega Man Maverick Hunter X

August 23rd, 2009 PSP Reviews No comments

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is a remake of the original Mega Man X title that first appeared on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game builds upon the original with new renderings of 3D character models, new environments and gameplay features that raise the bar for side-scrolling platformers. Mega Man Maverick Hunter X also includes an animated movie that provides real insight into the Mega Man X universe and even gives gamers a sneak peek at events that took place before the plot line of the first game. Plus to ensure that even the most veteran of gamers is given a real challenge, the level arrangements have been modified with item locations, map layouts and the strategies needed for completing levels all updated. The year is 21XX. A mysterious robot named X has become the model from which further Reploids were created to aid mankind. Unfortunately, some of the Reploids turned against the humans and were given the name Mavericks. In response to this, the Maverick Hunters, an elite squad of Reploids, were formed to combat these renegade Reploids and calm was restored until one of the Maverick Hunters, a powerful Reploid named Sigma, turned against the peacekeepers. Now X and his fellow Maverick Hunter friend, Zero, must prevent Sigma from executing his evil plans to destroy humanity.

5 Stars Review? From Me? Well, If You Insist…
Let’s just try to keep this short…

I went into this not entirely knowing what to expect, but perhaps figuring something between a port and a full-out remake. Basically, it remains the same game – but having played the original SNES version since not long after it came out, I can tell you it doesn’t feel exactly the same. Not in a bad way, don’t get me wrong, just different. Vile Mode especially is like a whole new experience, compared to the SNES version. I didn’t find it terribly difficult to pick up on, at least X Mode Normal Difficulty. Beyond that, as can be expected, it gets harder, especially (for me, anyway) Vile mode. If you’re a fan of the original Mega Man X SNES game, I think you’ll be in for a real treat. It may have differences, but I can promise you it won’t take long to adjust. And you’re in for a wild ride, on X Mode Hard Difficulty…heh.

Note: Just don’t mind the voice acting. That was probably the biggest let down in this game, for me. It’s not terrible, it’s just… Personally, it’s just not really what I had imagined – especially for Launch Octopus.

5 Stars Classic Games Remade
In order to breath life into a great classic game like this here is a good way to do it. The Graphics finally up to date slight changes and some the enemies were easier to take down but the difficulty setting put it were it belongs. Then you get to play as Vile and that was cool. All in all this Game is still great I very much hope and look forward to the rest of the MegaMan games getting thier turn like this.

4 Stars Good, but not GREAT
Although I will admit, it’s not a bad game, it’s not quite as good as the SNES original. While the SNES original was a fast paced action-adventure classic, this feels more like a Saturday-morning cartoon. Although, with the addition of the Vile mode and Day of Sigma anime, it’s well worth the money. In short, those new to the Megaman X series should pick this up ASAP. You won’t be disappointed. However, the Megaman X veterans who still remember the original, will be.

4 Stars brings Back Memories
I have to say that I really enjoy playing this game because it brings back memories of playing the very first mega man on nintendo. It is a very fun and well paced game.

4 Stars Awesome X
Megaman Marverick Hunter X is F***ing awesome. It’s ONE of the best titles out there for the PSP, so if your shopping here for a good game on your little hand held, this is it, but let’s go over a small review first:

GRAPHICS: 8/10. Color, lighting, frame rate, special effects, shading, characters and backgrounds all looks great. You can say this looks slightly better than the Sega Dreamcast graphics at best.

AUDIO: 7.5/10. Sound effects like gun blasts and explosions are superb. The voice acting is well done and some of the are very familiar as well. Though the music we remember from the good old days of course have been remix, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s just that when your playing the soundtrack just seems forgettable.

GAMEPLAY: 10/10. Tight and responsive controls, no lags and the frame rate of this catches up the action extremely well. Which means no slow downs whenever the game gets chaotic. Platforming, shooting and the ability to choose bosses to battle against is all still there, but with a few minor tweaks from Capcom to improve playing style.

REPLAY VALUE: 9/10. This game will get you going for about 3 to 4 times before you can put it to rest. The game offers a lot of versatility like play style. Plus there’s also a new character named Vile which brings an entire different style of play (he as over 40 weapons!) and story. Finally there’s also Hard Mode, though there’s only minor differences between Normal Mode. For instance, regular enemies are tougher to kill, you take more damage, health items restores less and most bosses gain a few “special attacks.”

OVERALL: 8.75/10. Fun, simple and tons of replay value. Great game, very addictive….

Lemmings

August 23rd, 2009 PSP Reviews No comments

Lemmings

This classic puzzle game of frenetic action is now on the PlayStation Portable system. As the Lemmings mindlessly wander about deadly environmental hazards, control their fate over raging rivers, steep cliffs and pools of lava. Command them to dig tunnels, build steps, stop traffic and climb walls so that they can escape each perplexing level. With more than 150 levels of addictive gameplay, enhanced graphics, a level editor, game sharing and more, you’ll be obsessed with saving the Lemmings.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Great game!
The only negative thing about this game was mastering the controls. Since you have to zoom in and click n particular lemmings to make them into whatever “worker” you need, this can be challenging at first. However, overall this game is really fun and a great homage to the original!!

5 Stars Atlast!
Lemmings is one of my favorite puzzle games. I was so happy when I found this for PSP! I cannot put it down…. I really love this game.

4 Stars Not too challenging but worth the price of admission
I spent hours and hours playing Lemmings in the various forms. When I heard it was being released for the PSP a few years back, I put the PSP on my wish list. With a family of five, money is tight, and I just now got around to picking it up. Next to my Archos video player, the PSP is the best purchase I’ve ever made.

Lemmings was my first game purchase and I certainly don’t regret it. It was everything I hoped it would be. If there is any disappointment, it’s that the levels are a little too easy. Although there are 156 levels, you can discount the first 60 because they are WAY too easy. I was also able to burn through the 36 new levels created specifically for the PSP. I figured they’d gradually get more difficult but that really wasn’t the case.

The controls are easy to learn. One great feature is the ability to pause the game and select a lemming and then restart. This resolves any issue of not being able to move the cursor fast enough. Oddly, I thought the analog stick would be the natural choice in moving the cursor, but it was the d-pad. Just an odd design choice, in my opinion… You will also wear out the fast forward button.

Overall, I think this game is four-star. It loses a star for not having more unique levels and more challenging levels. That being said, if you are looking for a puzzle game for younger kids, this probably isn’t it. They might enjoy the first 30 levels which are so easy a monkey could solve them, but after that it will be too difficult for them. I might try to create some age-appropriate levels for my kids. But I think this game is for older kids or adults. My next step is to figure out how to download user-created levels. I am sure some of those will be more difficult.

5 Stars Great Remake!
This was one of my favorite games back in the day, and the psp overhaul has definitely done it justice. The backgrounds and graphics are beautiful, the music has been updated and the new music is nice and ambient. It has all of the original stages, ~35 brand new stages, a complex level editor, and best of all, you can download other people’s created stages so the fun never ends!

5 Stars Superb
Probably the best puzzle game I ever played. It’s really fun and it will test your skills in every way. Puzzle game lovers this is a must have.

Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded

August 23rd, 2009 PSP Reviews No comments

Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded

Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded compiles more than 18 of its classic arcade hits in one complete package. This classic collection consists of some of the greatest arcade games in history. It features 2 and 3 person wireless gameplay for all titles!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars It’s worth it to play Street Fighter 2 on the go.
Ya…..I basically got this so I could play Street Fighter 2. The other games are allright and fun to play. Thier are better games on that other Capcom Classics. However I still got what I wanted.

5 Stars Capcom Reloaded Rocks!
King of Dragons and Knights of the Round plus the old Ghosts n Goblins are worth WAY more than the $10 I spent on this game – definitely worth every $1!!

1 Star I Never Even Recieved my Merchandise
I’d like to say I enjoyed the game but it never got here. They did how ever keep my twelve bucks. Amazon Sucks!!!!!!

4 Stars Great old school action
First off, this is a much better purchase than the remixed collection to me,which i also own…you can save any game on this collection, not so on the remix game….i also dont understand the other reviewer saying you cant adjust the difficulty setting, you can on every single game, although on the ghosts and goblins games you wont notice any difference other than the extra lives…..of course the load times are long, but thats nothing new on the psp…i will say if you are buying this game for the ghosts and goblins series you will get alot more enjoyment out of the “ultimate” ghosts and goblins game (a game you should snatch up if you can find a copy, and like platformers) which lets you respawn exactly where you die instead of having to restart at the beginning of every level…and the graphics are a nice touch….other good games on this title are eco fighters, and mercs and 3 versions of street fighter….i really like this game…..but the ghosts and goblins games are so tough they are almost too frustrating to be fun at times……….still,4 out of 5 stars…

5 Stars A great second helping of Capcom Classics for your PSP!!!
I don’t understand the terrible ratings of this awesome game!!! Okay I must admit,It’s not a good as it’s brother “Capcom Classics Remixed”,but Capcom Classics Reloaded still is a great collection of classics including,1942,1943,1943 Kai,Ghosts and Goblins series(3 games total!),3 Street Fighter II games,Son Son,Commando,King Of Dragons,Knights Of The Round and more!!! Lots of arcade classics on one tiny PSP disc!!! Two thumbs up!!! Five stars!!! A+

Pinball Hall of Fame The Williams Collection

Pinball Hall of Fame The Williams Collection

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Pinball Hall of Fame
Great graphic’s, fun games, many different one’s to pick from, you do not have to play the same one over and over. If you like pinball games this is a good one.

4 Stars excellent game awsome graphics
This game is very nice the graphic’s is awesome very well design u can choose many type of pinball machines feels like youre in a real pinball arcade place. i recommended it if u are a big fan of pinball this is a true collection.

5 Stars Arcade Pinball With No Waiting Lines!!!!!!!
In one word, WOW! Having just got a PSP for Christmas and while on the hunt for games I came across this one just by chance. I read raving reviews and was hyped to play, though I still had my doubts. My doubt was that I had a sneaking suspicion that pinball on the PSP would be pretty much the same as every other video pinball game I’ve ever played. Great fun though horribly inacurate. Let me tell you now this is not like all the others I’ve played.

Graphics, sound, and physics are all melted together to the verge of perfection. Yes, the PSP’s screen is limited here and at times it is difficult to track where your ball is, however this is not the fault of the game. The game dose a decent job of zooming in on bumpers and rails while paning out in time to focus on the flippers. The camera movements feel natural and dont throw you off at all. The physics are on as well with no unnatural floating or bumping. Sound effects accompany perfectly with the sound of a metal pinball rolling down the board while picking up speed is dead on. Seriously, it’s that good.

Now The Games!

Those same chills I used to get as a kid from making a pinball board flash multicolored lights and making that reverberating rumble sound have been brought back. Load screens feature the original back glass graphics that bring back memories for me. The games span from 1970 to the early 1990’s and offer a good variaty of boards from simple bumper and fliper to elaborate rails and chutes with a whole gag bag of lights and sounds.

The main screen is also set in an arcade which is a nice touch.

To put it blunt, if you like pinball, get this. Yes, it can take a toll on your eyes after a while. So what, put on a pair of glasses. Where else can you relive the glory days of pinball while driving to Florida.

5 Stars Much cheaper than owning the real thing!
I love pinball! My brother and I have 2, a Funhouse and a Whirlwind. They’re in his basement and once in a while I get the chance to go over there and play them. With the PSP version I can play them anytime! I would love to get a PinBot, High Speed, Fish Tales, Addams Family, Twilight Zone, ST: TNG, etc… but there’s no way I can afford all of them. At the very least I can play Pinbot and other classics on my PSP. Did I mention that I love pinball?

Mark

4 Stars Pinball Games
If you grew up when pinball machines were everywhere then this game is for you …it will bring back memories…I love this game…I am a big fan of pinball games and can’t wait for more old time pinball machines to be turned into games…

Me and My Katamari

August 22nd, 2009 PSP Reviews No comments

Me and My Katamari

The King of All Cosmos takes a break from celestial construction and takes the royal family on vacation to a tropical island paradise. Here, they become tasked with the responsibility of creating new katamari islands for homeless animals. The King’s pint-sized son, the Prince, is called upon for this epic task with the help of all his cousins. Assume the role of the pint-sized prince and grow your katamari by rolling it around cleverly designed locations to collect objects throughout the world.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Katamari fan disappointed
I’m an avid Katamari fan. This game was a lot of fun, and very reminiscent of the first two games, but the controls are God awful, and tend to glitch a lot. They cycle through the same three stages over and over again. I don’t mind that the music is the same as the first two games. The difficulty level on some stages is out of control.

This game was fun, but it could be better. In the end, it was more stressful than relaxing.

5 Stars I know not many people will agree with me on this but…
I liked this version better than the PS2 version. Admittedly I played this one first before I ever even knew that PS2 had a version, so the excitement of first playing the game may be attributed to my love of the PSP version over the PS2 version. But whatever the cause I enjoyed this one more, and here’s why.

This game is so simplistic it’s just a blast. It belongs on the PSP because of its simple graphics and easy to play on the go gameplay. Both the PS2 and PSP versions have very simple storylines that don’t require your full attention to just play the game. The King of the Cosmos went surfing while on vacation and ended up accidentally destroying all of the land on the planet he was on. You now have to roll your katamari around and collect items to rebuild the islands and such. Very similar to the PS2 version in fact, this ported over to the PSP so well that it lacks almost nothing the PS2 version has. The music and graphics are even the same. The only difference that most people will notice that have played both versions is that of entering levels. The PSP version has a shockingly funny way of entering levels where the prince is slingshot into the distance and appears to be hitting the King’s crotch. I fell out of my chair laughing when I first saw this.

If I had to have one complaint about the PSP version it’s that your thumbs will hurt…a lot, because of the controls. It’s impossible just to push lightly on the directional pad and buttons to steer the katamari. You’ll find yourself pushing harder on the buttons to try and make it go faster or something and your hands will kill you.

I don’t know, I’m sure lots of people are going to continue to misuse the “helpful” vote link by clicking no on me simply because they disagree and not because my review wasn’t helpful, but I don’t care. The PSP version is well worth a try in my opinion and lacks nothing from the PS2 version.

4 Stars Katamari does it again!
This is a great game, it’s pointless, fun, and will have you playing it for hours. If you’ve played the others you’ll love this one and if you’ve never played a katamari game just buy this one and start. The game is simple roll and collect things, I know it sounds a little boring but it really isn’t. the game itself is sort of long and the eternal levels are good but the controls take some getting used to if you’ve played the others but if you’re a newcomer it;ll be easy. Highly recommended for anyone with a psp.

5 Stars Great PSP Game
I have played the other katamari games and enjoy this one just as much. The gameplay is addicting. The controls are simple, though they take a while to get used to. I enjoyed the game and the bonus for beating it. I highly recommend this game to all psp owners

3 Stars Poor Camera, Poor Controls
Me and My Katamari PSP brings the fun world of Katamari ball rolling to the PSP. You would think this would be the ultimate, non-violent fun game to play on your handheld for hours. The developers just didn’t do their job properly, though.

The basics, if you’ve never played a Katamari game, is that you’re a young prince rolling a “sticky ball” around. You are surrounded by objects of various sizes and types. So let’s say you play a level that’s a kid’s room. There will be little lego shapes, big pencils, and all sorts of other items. When your sticky ball is small, it can only grab onto the little things. As you roll it up and it gets bigger, it can now grab onto larger things.

It’s a simple concept, but in practice it’s great fun. One creature might only want “hard” objects so you have to avoid sticking the non-hard things and only go after hard things. Your aims usually involve a combination of what to get, how big to get your ball, and how much time you have.

There are different characters to get to, and different costumes, but really, it’s all about ball rolling and fun, catchy music. This game is a huge hit on other platforms. Just how could they have not made this a fantastically fun game to play while riding on the bus?

The answer is in the camera and controls. First, the camera. Really, the game only involves ball rolling. There aren’t fast paced action battles or complex graphics. You would think if the only task developers had was to show you rolling a ball, that they could do this properly. Unfortunately, the camera is just awful. There were numerous times that the camera swung around into a position that had a wall blocking my vision, and I had to try to figure out how to move my character to get unstuck. With a timer clicking, this could easily mean the difference between success and failure.

So, you’d think, if all you do is push a ball that the controls would be simple, right? Wrong! I had SO much trouble with both the controls and with the placement of key commands. I kept hoping that practice would get me used to them. After all, I play a ton of PSP games and never really have this issue on other games. When it became obvious that the longer I played, the more sore my fingers got, it really became clear that the control layout was just poorly done. If it was a PSP inherent thing, I’d have this problem all the time. I don’t – it’s just this game.

There really was so much potential here for fantastic fun, and I feel very disappointed. Maybe Katamari is simply not a game meant to be on the PSP and I’ll have to stick with my other PSP games. I’ll give it a 3 for great concept – but very poor implementation.
